Why take part in an open award?
An open award is ideal for a groups of friends or for someone who does not yet have a team to complete their expedition with. This is a great way to meet new people and to experience The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in a different dynamic.

Picture yourself venturing into the great outdoors, forging new friendships, and pushing the boundaries of what you thought possible. The DofE program offers you the chance to explore four key areas: volunteering, physical fitness, skills development, and an unforgettable expedition.
Most people who attend our open DofE expeditions fall into one of two camps.
1) They do a full programme with us as they can’t do it at their school or they have left school.
2) They do just the assessed expedition with us as they couldn’t make the dates that their school set for their expedition.
However, as our programme is entirely modular, you can choose to take part in as many of DofE elements with us as required.
Most participants choose to join us for their full experience and along the way gain a group of long lasting friends who’ve shared in their life changing experiences with them.
Open DofE Expedition programmes include:
- Support and guidance through the award
- Training and preparation / Refresher for expedition
- Comprehensive pre-expedition pack including parents information, kit lists, consent forms etc.
- Supervision and training from experienced instructors
- Use of all group kit – tents, stoves, fuel, group shelters, maps and compasses
- Accredited assessor for the qualifying expedition
- Campsite fees
